The annual LGBT activity Pink Dot HK held it 5th anniversary at West Kowloon Art Part on Oct.21, the theme of this year was “It’5 love”, and it made several changes and improvements.
Pink Dot HK is the largest LGBT annual event in Hong Kong since 2014. It’s a free-for-all fun carnival and outdoor concert for LGBT+ and colleagues in support of diversity and equality. There are also NGO booths, talks and some activities every year.
More Kinds and Numbers of NGOs
“The biggest change I’ve noticed is the number of NGOs,” said Emily Jin, this was her second time join in the Pink Dot. “Besides, there are many NGOs about transgender, which I almost didn’t see last year.”
This year, Pink Dot invited more kinds of NGOs, their focuses included transgender, elderly gay, part-time boyfriend etc.
“We organize some activities for elderly gays,” said a helper of Gay&Grey, an NGO focuses on elderly gay. “We hope that those elderly won’t fell upset, we want them to know there are many people support them.”
Non-homosexual Ambassador
Every year, Pink Dot selects pink ambassadors, usually they are singers, actors or some homosexual couples. One of this year’s pink ambassadors is Joyce Cheng, a local singer.
“I think Joyce is the first pink ambassador who is not a homosexual,” said Emily Jin.
“I was really worried when I was elected as the ambassador,” Joyce Cheng said to the audience after she sang a song on the main stage. “Because I am a heterosexual, people may think I cannot represent the LGBT group. But I want to be the ambassador, I want LGBT group to know we are care about them.”
New Activities
Comparing the former program timetables and 2018’s, this year’s Pink Dot held blessing for same-gender couples in a Rainbow Church.
Additionally, Pink Dot 2018 had a kids zone, providing face painting and children crafts for kids.
“I think it encourages parents to bring their kids to this activity,” said Sharon, who has been to Pink Dot three times before, and she always brought her daughter here. “It helps kids know about LGBT. My daughter likes Pink Dot and she thinks love is love.”
New Hosting Time
“It’s getting better every year, for example they moved the date,” Sharon said.“They moved the date a little advanced, so it’s not as hot…… They used to have it in September.”
However, as the reporter passing through the crowd, there were still some people complaining it is too hot, and they left early.
“Maybe they can offer more free drinks, because it’s still a little bit hot,” Sharon added.
